2001
In November, 1999, Elian González and his mother attempted to reach the United States after escaping the island of Cuba. The mother died at sea. The little boy was rescued and taken to Memorial Hospital's Joe DiMaggio's Children Hospital. There he recived emergency care and was discharged in satisfactory condition to this relatives in the United States.
In the photograph, Dr. Antonio Gordon presented a plaque expressing the gratitude of all Cubans for the health services rendered to Elian, Mrs. Nina Tucker, hospital administrator received the plaque and pledged to display in the appropiate place in the hospital. Some of the staff that joined the Finlay group in the efforts to provide guidance to professional and media groups was also present, among them, Dr. Adelaida Arias, PhD. And Dr. Gladys Lorenzo, PhD, both psychologists.
